The Washington Nationals had hoped for the best in regards to the thumb of outfielder Bryce Harper. Now they must prepare for the future without him.

According to ESPN’s Keith Law the Nationals will be without Harper until early July as he is set to undergo surgery to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his left thumb. The injury occurred on Friday as he slid head first into third base.

A season ago Harper missed 44 games after suffering a knee injury when he slammed into the outfield wall at Dodger Stadium.

The Nationals are also dealing with hand injuries to third baseman Ryan Zimmerman and catcher Wilson Ramos, both of which are a considerable amount of time away from returning to the field.
