Relief pitcher Kyle Farnsworth was unable to make the New York Mets roster out of spring training but has already been summoned to the major league level.

Farnsworth will occupy a spot in middle relief for the Mets after showing decreased velocity this spring, throwing in the 87-89 mph range.

The Mets previously had cut Farnsworth during spring training only to re-sign him to a minor league deal.

Farnsworth spent last season with the Tampa Bay Rays and Pittsburgh Pirates posting a 4.70 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP across 38 1/3 innings of work.

In order to make room for Farnsworth the Mets have sent Ryan Reid to Triple-A Las Vegas. Reid threw 11 innings for Pittsburgh last season allowing two runs and was claimed on waivers in December.

Additionally the Mets have placed Daniel Murphy on paternity leave and have recalled Wilmer Flores for the time being.
