The Chicago Cubs view John Axford as a potential candidate to close in 2014.
Of course the Cubs would first have to sign Axford before they could install him as their closer.
Patrick Mooney of CSNChicago.com reports that there is “mutual interest” between the Cubs and Axford who was non-tendered by St. Louis earlier this week.
Axford’s agent says his client has been contacted by 14 teams but it’s unclear how many would consider him as a closer. Any team signing Axford would have control over him through the 2016 season.
