The Boston Red Sox have signed free agent catcher A.J. Pierzysnki to a contract.

Pierzynski, 36, played the 2013 season on a one-year contract with the Texas Rangers responding with a .272/.297/.425 line with 17 home runs and 70 RBI over 134 games.

The move essentially means that the Red Sox have moved on from Jarrod Saltalamacchia who is seeking a deal up to three years.

David Ross will enter the 2014 season as the backup catcher with minor leaguers Blake Swihart and Christian Vazquez both close to being ready for major league action.

Pierzynski will make $8.25 million in 2014 up from the $7.5 million he made in 2013.
