Left handed pitcher Martin Perez was not arbitration-eligible until 2016 but the Texas Rangers went ahead and signed him to a four-year contract on Thursday.

Perez’s new deal will cover the 2014-2017 seasons and includes club options for 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The Rangers will give Perez $12.5 million in guaranteed money but may end up saving a significant amount of money if Perez does develop into the top of the rotation starter that the Rangers.

Perez, 22, had a 3.62 ERA and 84/37 K/BB ratio in 124 1/3 innings (20 starts) for Texas in 2013.
