The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed pitcher Edinson Volquez to a major league deal.

Volquez, 30, was recently cut loose by the San Diego Padres after compiling a 6.01 ERA and a 1.67 WHIP in 142 1/3 innings of work.

The Dodgers are not placing their playoff hopes on the arm of Volquez so there is no harm in looking. Volquez could be an late season at the end of the rotation.

Chris Capuano has given the Dodgers little to be excited about from the fifth starters spot in the rotation. Over Capuano’s last four starts he has allowed 15 earned runs in just 19 1/3 innings of work.

If Volquez proves to be worthy of a roster spot he could sneak onto the Dodgers post season roster as a reliever.
