The Tampa Bay Rays have designated Kyle Farnsworth for assignment. Farnsworth, 37, has been ineffective for the most part over 39 appearances this season.
A drop in velocity has taken a toll on Farnsworth who owns a 5.76 ERA and a 1.48 WHIP this season.
Farnsworth was spending his third season with Tampa Bay, his first of which was 2011 when he claimed the closers role and compiled a 2.18 ERA and 0.99 WHIP over 63 games.
Analysis: A team could take a gamble on Farnsworth but his days of being a back of the bullpen anchor are gone.
