It is August and Chris Carpenter is not any closer to returning to the St. Louis Cardinals. Carpetner will not start or relieve for the Cardinals anytime soon and the right hander is no longer optimistic about pitching this season.
Carpenter, 38, has not pitched in the majors at all this season since experiencing discomfort in his arm while throwing in February.

The Cardinals had been hopeful that Carpenter would return at some point this year and he had worked his way into action at Triple-A but that came to an end in mid-July.
Carpenter has a 144-94 record in 15 MLB seasons. The 2005 NL Cy Young winner has a 3.76 career ERA and a 1.28 WHIP. Carpenter is a three time NL All-Star.
