On Monday the Texas Rangers acquired Matt Garza from the Chicago Cubs, leaving Jake Peavy as the best available starting pitcher available.

With little more than a week until Major League Baseball’s trade deadline teams are putting their best offers in for players like Peavy.

Peavy, 32, is under contract through 2014 with $14.5 owed next season.

The two teams linked heavily to Peavy are the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals.

Peavy made his return to the mound on Saturday with positive results. After having some early trouble the right hander worked through six innings allowing two runs on seven hits.

More important than the three strikeouts was that Peavy did not show any ill effects of the rib fracture that landed him on the disabled list in early June.

On the season Peavy has a 4.19 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP over 12 starts.
