Boston Red Sox reliever Joel Hanrahan confirmed on Saturday morning that he would undergo season-ending surgery.

Hanrahan’s flexor tendon is torn off the bone and he will meet with Dr. James Andrews next week for surgery. The surgery will keep Hanrahan out of action for six months and there is no guarantee that the right hander will not require Tommy John surgery.

The Red Sox acquired Hanrahan from the Pirates in December. He will become a free agent at the end of the season. In nine games this season Hanrahan notched 4 saves but had a 9.82 ERA and a 2.18 WHIP.

Andrew Bailey, who Boston had hoped will fill in as the teams closer, is unlikely to return from the disabled list on Tuesday. Bailey may end up needing a rehab assignment for his forearm injury. Junichi Tazawa will fill in at closer in his absence.
