Cardinals pither Jason Motte underwent Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Tuesday. The surgery was performed by team physician Dr. Georg Paletta and has been called a success according to the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

Motte attempted to rehab the torn ligament in his elbow initially but opted for surgery after experiencing a setback lat week.

The former closer will miss the rest of the 2013 season and will likely miss the start of the 2014 season. Currently Edward Mujica is currently serving as the Cardinals’ closer while Trevor Rosenthal is also an option.

Motte recorded an NL best 42 saves last season while compiling a 2.75 ERA and a 0.92 WHIP.
