The Detroit Tigers have promoted Jose Valverde to the major league roster. In a surprise move, Tigers manager Jim Leyland considered Leyland the teams closer.

Valverde was signed by the Tigers earlier this month after the team denied interest in their former closer.

With the promotion to the major league roster, Valverde will take over the role previously occupried by Joaquin Benoit. Benoit had appeared in eight games with a 2.00 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP while picking up one save.

During Valverde’s three year tenure with the Tigers which spanned from 2010 through 2012 he racked up 110 saves before fading down the stretch last year.
