Red Sox release Ryan Sweeney

Outfielder Ryan Sweeney has been released by the Boston Red Sox. Sweeney was unable to make the Red Sox roster for Opening Day and did not want to accept an assignment to Triple-A.

This spring Sweeney made 52 plate appearances but managed just a .217/.308/.239 line.

Sweeney, 28, spent last season with the Red Sox playing in 63 games. The Red Sox were Sweeney’s third different organization.

While Sweeney should have offers it is hard to envision anyone offering him a guaranteed spot on a big league roster, His path back to the majors is likely to come via a minor league deal.
