How bad is it getting for the New York Yankees? Derrek Lee opted for retirement instead of signing a deal with the team.

The Yankees contacted the 37-year-old Lee about a position for the club. Lee, who retired after the 2011 season, considered the offer for a few days but has notified the Yankees that he has decided to stay retired.

Currently featured on the injured list for the Yankees are third basemen Alex Rodriguez, first basemen Mark Tiexeira and outfielder Curtis Granderson.

Brian Cashman also reached out to Scott Rolen and Chipper Jones. Both players turned down the Yankees offer.
