Athletics pitcher Fernando Rodriguez needs Tommy John surgery

The season of right-handed reliever Fernando Rodriguez is over before it began. The 28-year-old old will need Tommy John surgery to repair a ligament in his right elbow.

Rodriguez will miss the entire 2013 season.

Oakland acquired Rodriguez from Houston along with Jed Lowrie. Chris Carter went to Houston in the deal.

Rodriguez’s fastball could reach 95-mph but he lasted just one pitch in his first spring outing on Monday. He is 4-13 with a 4.89 career ERA and was 2-10 with a 5.37 ERA with the Astros last year.
