Jim Thome would like to play in 2013, manage at some point

The Slugger is not done. “I’m not retired” is what Jim Thome told CSNPhilly recently. Whether there is a market for the 42-year-old remains to be seen.

“If someone wants me to play, I’d consider it for sure. I feel good. If I didn’t feel good, I wouldn’t even consider it. But I feel good. I’d like to play.”

Last season Thome hit .252/.344/.442 with eight homers and 25 RBI in 186 plate appearances. Thome began the season with the Philadelphia Phillies but was later traded to the Baltimore Orioles. He also missed some time due to his back.

“At this stage, am I an everyday player? No,” Thome said. “But I think I can still play. The best thing for me is being a designated hitter somewhere. But if an NL team calls, sure I’d consider it. I still feel like I can give a team a veteran presence and get a big hit off the bench.”

If Thome does not get an offer to play in 2013 that does not mean he is entirely done with baseball; One day Thome would like to manage.
