Mike Trout named AL Rookie of the Year

Los Angeles Angles outfielder Mike Trout was named the American League Rookie of the Year today. Trouth, a 21-year-old from New Jersey, not only won the award but has placed himself in consideration for one of the greatest rookie seasons of all-time.

Trout burst on the scene this year for an under achieving Angels team. Finishing the year with a .326/.399/.564 line the right handed hitting outfielder has also placed himself into consideration for the AL’s MVP award.

The season did not begin with Trouth on the Angels Opening Day roster but it did not take long before the Angels called him up and he started producing. He never stopped producing leading the Major Leagues in runs scored and stolen bases while still finding time to mash 30 home runs.

Trout’s numbers may have made him the obvious choice for the award but that is not to say others did not produce equally impressive numbers. The 2012 class of rookies may go down as one of the best ever for the American League.

In any other season Texas Rangers starter Yu Darvish who finished the year 16-9 with a 3.90 ERA may have been crowed rookie of the year. Instead he will join a trio of Oakland A’s as runners up for the award. Yoenis Cespedes (.292, 23 HR, 82 RBI), Jarrod Parker (13-8, 3.47 ERA) and Ryan Cook (2.09 ERA, 14 SV) all made contributions that resulted in the Athletics winning the AL West.

Will Middlebrooks of the Red Sox; the Orioles’ Manny Machado; the Rays’ Matt Moore; the Mariners’ Jesus Montero; White Sox relievers Addison Reed and Nate Jones, and Royals reliever Kelvin Herrera are just some rookies who had a positive impact on their team this season.

Now the question for Trout will be whether or not he wins the AL MVP award. His competition comes in the form of Miguel Cabrera who hit for the first Triple Crown since 1967.
