Roush Yates Engines will provide the Ford FR9 engine to Penske Racing in 2013. Penske, who is currently running Dodge equipment, will return to the Ford nameplate for next season. Penske ran Ford cars from 1991 through 2002, highlighted by the No. 2 driven by Rusty Wallace.
Over the race weekend at Pocono Raceway, Jack Roush expressed optimism that Penske and Roush Yates Engines would provide a unified face for Ford Racing in 2013.
“It’s truly an honor to provide Penske Racing with Roush Yates Ford engines,” said Doug Yates, CEO of Roush Yates. “I have always admired Roger Penske as a team owner and a respected businessman in our sport and beyond. I am looking forward to many wins, championships, and other successes in supporting the Penske organization.”
Penske will not be shutting down the 80-man operation they currently have but a sale to Dodge is still possible. It’s been reported that some members of the shop will be reassigned to Roush Yates Engines.
“Ford has been consistent in its belief that we will be stronger with one engine specification rather than continuing with an independent approach,” said Tim Cindric, President of Penske Racing. “Roush Yates has a proven record and we are looking forward to many successes together.”
Penske fields two cars in the Sprint Cup Series, the No. 2 for Brad Keselowski and the No. 22 which is currently driven by Sam Hornish Jr.
