Elliott Sadler driving for Waltrip in five races

Veteran driver Elliott Sadler will drive the #55 car of Michael Waltrip Racing in five races this season. Recently Waltrip announced that Sadler will drive the car for the first time at Bristol on March 18. He will also drive the August event at Bristol as well as both races at Martinsville and the race at New Hampshire.

Sadler is again running for the Nationwide title this year while driving for Richard Childress Racing. Sadler competed in the Daytona 500 driving a fourth car for Childress, the #33 which had been guaranteed a starting spot for the first five races. He made contact with Jimmie Johnson at the beginning of the race which took Johnson out of contention early.

Making the best of the recent announcement, Salder won his first Nationwide race since 1998 at Phoenix.

Mark Martin, who won the pole for Sunday’s race, will drive a total of 24 races in the #55 for Waltrip while Waltrip will drive four events himself.

UPDATE: Richard Childress, the car owner for which Sadler drives in the Nationwide Series, pulled the driver aside following his Phoenix win and told him he was not going to drive for Waltrip this season. Waltrip fields Toyota Camry’s in the Sprint Cup Series which conflicts with the Chevrolet’s that Childress fields. “I think Richard, along with some of the executives that he has, have just decided that it’s probably not in our best interest to do that right now” said Sadler in a interview with SPEED.
