GM Jerry Jones stepping down? “there’s no way” says owner Jerry Jones

When asked by Bob Costas whether he would have fired himself as general manager, if given the chance, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the following.

“Well, I think so … because he was there to dismiss,” he said. “I’ve always worked for myself, and you can’t do that. You basically have to straighten that guy out in the mirror when you work for yourself. But, certainly, if I’d had the discretion, I’ve done it with coaches and certainly I would have changed a general manager.”

That does not mean that Jerry Jones is thinking about making a change. Asked whether he would ever step down as the general manager of the Cowboys Jones said it was not possible.

“We are not structured that way,” Jones told KRLD-FM on Tuesday morning. “We didn’t structure it that way with my ownership. There’s no way that I would be involved here and not be the final decision-maker on something as important as players, and that is a key area. That’s never been anybody’s misunderstanding. It’s been a debated thing, but it’s just not going to happen.”

Meanwhile, rumors will persist about the future of head coach Jason Garrett. The Cowboys are 3-5 this season after a series of disappointing losses.

“To change, I’d have to change myself. People don’t do that. If you’ve got the commitment and you have the investment, and I’m talking about in time, effort, all of those kinds of things, you change yourself. You don’t change out and have someone else go in there and do it.”
