Dodgers avoid arbitration with A.J. Ellis, Marlins sign Nick Masset

The Dodgers have avoided arbitration with catcher A.J. Ellis signing the backstop to a one-year deal worth $4.25 million.

Ellis was arbitration eligible for the second time this winter after hitting .191/.323/.254 with three home runs and 25 RBI across 93 games last season.

It is a high price to pay for a backup catch the caliber of Ellis but the Dodgers are able and willing to spend it to keep him as protection behind Yasmani Grandal on their roster.

Marlins sign reliever Nick Masset

The Marlins have signed relief pitcher Nick Masset.

Masset, 32, has struggled for years now and will have a tough time cracking the Marlins suddenly deep roster. Last season he had a 5.80 ERA, 1.78 WHIP, and 36/24 K/BB ratio in 45 innings (51 appearances) for the Rockies.

His signing is purely a depth move for the Marlins.
