Hamlin survives rain, restarts, to win at Dover

Denny Hamlin captured his fourth NASCAR Cup Series win of the season on Sunday, outdueling teammate Chase Briscoe in double overtime at Dover Motor Speedway. Driving the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, Hamlin edged Briscoe by 0.310 seconds at the finish line, leading 67 of 407 laps in the Autotrader EchoPark Automotive 400.

The win marked Hamlin’s third career victory at the 1-mile Delaware oval and the 58th of his Cup Series career — the most among active drivers this season.

Chase Briscoe, piloting the No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, earned his second consecutive runner-up finish. Alex Bowman finished third, followed by Kyle Larson in fourth and Ty Gibbs rounding out the top five.

Gibbs and Ty Dillon were the final two drivers to advance in the In-Season Challenge tournament. Gibbs’ strong finish knocked out Tyler Reddick (12th), while Dillon’s 20th-place result eliminated John Hunter Nemechek by a single position — setting the stage for a $1 million showdown.

Pole-sitter Chase Elliott and Christopher Bell split the stage wins but ran into trouble late. Elliott led 171 of the first 184 laps but slipped to fifth after a green-flag pit stop mishap. Bell led 67 laps but spun in Turn 3 after contact with Elliott at the start of the final stage, derailing his race.

Rain briefly disrupted the action, with a Lap 338 caution altering race strategies. Hamlin took the lead when his team opted to stay out. Another rain delay on Lap 386 paused the race for over 56 minutes, but the top eight remained on track after pit stops.

A late-race incident involving Bell, William Byron, and Noah Gragson set up the first of two overtime restarts. Hamlin held firm through both, fending off his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates to seal the win.

Meanwhile, Shane van Gisbergen’s win streak ended after a punctured tire forced an early unscheduled pit stop. He finished 30th, snapping his two-race victory run at Chicago and Sonoma.

Next up, the Cup Series heads to Indianapolis Motor Speedway for the Brickyard 400 Presented by PPG on Sunday (2 p.m. ET, TNT Sports, HBO Max, IMS Radio, SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Just five races remain before the 16-driver playoff field is locked in.
