Some drivers will find themselves looking at last chance qualifying as their hope of making the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500. For others they walked away from Saturday just happy to be in the field.
Graham Rahal’s Indy 500 drama from the past two seasons nearly carried over to a third before the Rahal Letterman Lanigan driver locked into the race in the 30th spot on Saturday. Jacob Abel, Marco Andretti, Rinus VeeKay and Marcus Armstrong were not as fortunate.
Armstrong and Colton Herta were both involved in early qualifying crashes. Both teams were able to put their cars back together with Herta taking the 29th spot.
NASCAR Cup Series driver Kyle Larson qualified his McLaren entry 21st.
Track activity will continue on Sunday with the bottom four drivers competing for the final three spots in the field. The top-12 will also move on to Day 2 qualifying where the top 12 of the race will be set.
Coverage of the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 will air on FOX with race day coverage starting at 10:00 am.
