The reigning champion Alex Palou put himself in victory lane to win his first event at the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.
Scott McLaughlin began the day on the pole but an incident on lap 1 would allow those on the green tires to switch to blacks giving them a short stint on what was expected to be the inferior tire choice.
That incident would end the day for Nolan Siegel, Will Power and Louis Foster. The incident appeared to start when Siegel checked up and Power made contact with his rear end.
After starting the day 23rd, Pato O’Ward found himself clinging to the lead lap with a third of the laps passed.
McLaughlin pit and take on the green tires and almost immediately saw them lose pace with the blacks. Meanwhile Colton Herta’s crew would have trouble getting on the right rear tire during his stop losing precious time.
After starting eighth Palou would use the undercut to his advantage to take the lead in the last third of the race as he pulled over five seconds ahead of Josef Newgarden.
Newgarden would pull within two seconds with 10 laps to go. Newgarden would never get closer than half a second and eventually would lose second to Scott Dixon to finish third.
