Alex Palou sets pace in Mid-Ohio first practice, Speeds

Alex Palou controlled the pace of Friday’s opening practice session at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car course.

Agustin Canapino would bring out a red flag before the midway part of the session as his car stopped and began to smoke on the racetrack. The red flag would be extended as rain began to fall on the track surface.

This also marked the start of the second half of the season where IndyCar has a shift in the power unit. During the second half of the season drivers will use a new hybrid power unit, a collaboration between Honda and Chevrolet. The new power unit is expected to add 60 horsepower to cars but comes at a cost of additional weight which will impact fuel and tire strategies.

Mid-Ohio is a 13-turn track which measures just over two miles around. Drivers will have another practice session Saturday morning before qualifying and then a warmup session on Sunday.

Sunday’s race will air on NBC and Peacock beginning at 1:30 pm ET.
