Sam Mayer scored his first short track win at Iowa Speedway winning the HyVee Perks 250.
Rain forced the cancellation of qualifying with Austin Hill starting out front only to watch as Justin Allgaier took the lead to start the race. Later Chandler Smith would move to the top spot as Corey Heim worked his way up through the field quickly. Shane Van Gisbergen who was slated to start the event second had to go to the rear of the field following a crash on Friday/
AJ Allmendinger brought out the first caution after hitting the wall. The field was split on pitting for tires or staying out. Jeb Burton would get into the wall near the end of the first stage giving Smith the stage win under caution.
Spins by Van Gisbergen and Patrick Emerling brought out two cautions in the second stage while Parker Retzlaff went to the garage with smoke in the cockpit. With one to go Jesse Love lost a right front tire to bring out the caution giving Smith his second stage win of the day.
Pit strategy would shuffle Smith back. A tire failure ended the day of Allgaier midway though the third stage. John Hunter Nemechek led them back to green but it was not long before Hill blew a tire entering turn one. Riley Herbst would get around Nemecheck on the restart but would have to deal with a charging Sam Mayer and Heim. With seven to go Mayer went to the lead as Nemechek went into the wall.
The race went to overtime but Mayer would remain in the lead to claim the win. Mayer’s Iowa win is the second of the season for him.
