Scott Dixon used fuel again to his advantage to claim the win at the Detroit Street Race.
Colton Herta began the day on the pole. On the opening lap Theo Porchaire and Will Power would make contact resulting in Power spinning and taking rear wing damage. The cars of Pato O’Ward, Alexander Rossi, and Felix Rosenqvist also were involved in the incident and lost multiple positions. Alex Palou would pit early to get on the green tires hoping to use blacks for the rest of the event.
Santino Ferrucci would get into the back of Rosenqvist to bring out the second full course caution which allowed Alex Palou to get off the green tires and satisfy tire requirements early in the race. Ferrucci would be given a stop and go penalty for the contact with Rosenqvist.
Under the caution, weather would fall on the track causing some drivers to switch to wets and others out on slicks. Herta would surrender the lead to take on wets. A prolonged caution made matters worse as the rain appeared to stop. On the restart Power would get into the car of Rinus VeeKay bringing out another caution.
On the restart an aggressive Herta made a move to get around Palou but went into the run off area bringing out yet another caution. Power would be given a penalty for the contact with VeeKay and then an additional one for pitting while the pits were closed. On the restart Christian Lundgaard would spin out Romain Grosejean bringing out yet another caution. Josef Newgarden would get a stop though penalty for a previous pitstop. Lundgaard would get a stop and go for the contact with Grosejean.
A spin by Newgarden on the restart would block Palou as a caution came out. Dixon would rely on those cautions to get into the lead and stretch his fuel yet again to claim the win and take the points lead in the process.
