Sam Mayer claims first career win, Road America 180 Xfinity Series Results

Sam Mayer won his first career race at Road America, becoming the 14th driver in as many races to win an Xfinity Series race at the four-plus mile track.

AJ Allmendinger began the day on the pole, a stark contrast to where he will start tomorrow’s Cup Series race. The driver of the No. 10 Chevrolet opted to skip Cup Series qualifying at Richmond Raceway despite being just a handful of points out of the playoffs as he aimed for a trophy on the road course.

Justin Allgaier would be the leader when the first caution fell on lap 10 when Katherine Legge lost power. The biggest mover prior to the yellow was Sammy Smith who moved up to 13th after starting 30th.

On lap 21 Chandler Smith would bring out the caution after a brake failure.

Riley Herbst would get spun from John Hunter Nemechek. Sheldon Creed, Ryan Ellis and Austin Hill among others were involved in the incident with the caution coming out when Herbst was unable to get his car refired.

As Allmendinger dealt with braking and mechanical concerns, Allgaier would win the second stage and try to pull away in the third before Alex Labbe made hard contact with a wall.

Josh Berry would get swirly in the closing laps setting off a crash that would take out Allmendinger, Sammy Smith and Cole Custer. The race would go to overtime. Connor Mosack would blow up on the restart forcing a second overtime.

In the second overtime Sage Karam briefly took the lead from Allgaier before Mayer was able to get around him after he missed a turn.

On the cool down lap Mayer would pull into a sand track in what appeared to be an effort to do donuts damaging the front end of his car.
