Christian Lundgaard began the Grand Prix of Toronto at the front of the field and finished there Sunday scoring his first career win in the NTT IndyCar Series.
Tom Blomqvist’s first IndyCar race would end on the first lap after a multiple car incident which was trigged by too many cars trying to fit though a corner.
Romain Grosjean would crash midway though the race to bring out the second yellow erasing a lead of more than five seconds that Lundgaard had amassed though the first round of pitstops. On the restart Helio Castroneves would get hit by Kyle Kirkwood ending his race and bringing out the yellow yet again.
Lundgaard would pit under the yellow while McLaughlin would stay out. Kirkwood would be given a stop and go penalty for the contact with Castroneves as Alex Palou passed Colton Herta for fourth, the first car on newer tires.
McLaughin would pit from the lead on lap 61 while Rinus VeeKay who was third pitted prior. Concerns began to mount about the front win of Alex Palou as Lundgaard passed him on lap 62. Dixon would surrender the lead to Lundgaard moments later as he pitted. Rossi would get back on the lead lap due to Dixon’s pit stop but found himself just ahead of Lundgaard.
The win is the 21-year-olds second career podium. Palou would nurse his damaged car to a second place finish with Herta scoring his first podium of the year in third. The win is the first in three years for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing.
