The San Diego Padres have designated Nelson Cruz for assignment.
Cruz, who is in his 19th major league season, was batting .245 with five home runs and 23 RBI across 49 games for the Padres.
The Padres also placed pitcher Michael Wacha on the 15-day injured list with shoulder inflammation while calling up infielder Matthew Batten form Triple-A El Paso.
Cruz, 43, has 464 career home runs. The Padres signed him to a one-year contract in the offseason.
