Daniel Murphy lasted played in the major leagues in 2020 with the Rockies. After two years away from the game Murphy is giving the game another shot.
Murphy has been working on his swing in the independent Atlantic League playing for the Long Island Ducks. During 37 games Murphy was hitting .331 with two home runs. Signed to a minor league deal by the Angels, Murphy is now headed to Triple-A Salt Lake.
“Honestly, I didn’t know until a week or so ago that he was playing,” Angels manager Phil Nevin said via ESPN. “It sounds like he looks good. He’s been swinging the bat. We’ll see what we got when he goes out and plays.”
At face value the move is a depth signing though wilder things have happened in the sport.
With Murphy gone, Ruben Tejada has been activated to take his roster spot on the Ducks.
In his career Murphy has appeared in 1,452 major league games between the Mets, Nationals, Cubs and Rockies compiling a .296/.341/.455 line, an OPS+ of 113 to go with 138 home runs and 735 RBI.
