Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen kills bird with warmup pitch

Birds and the Arizona Diamondbacks are not a good combination.

On Wednesday pitcher Zach Gallen hit a bird with a curveball while warming up in Oakland. The bird did not survive. Gallen was not on the mound or in a game, rather he was warming up in the outfield.

If this sounds familiar it’s because just about every baseball fan is familiar with the last Diamondbacks bird incident. Randy Johnson hit a dove with a fastball during a spring training game in 2001. Johnson was pitching in a spring training game at the time and was on the mound.

Johnson’s pitch that hit a bird resulted in an explosion of feathers, while Gallen’s bird fell to the ground. Johnson would go on to win the Cy Young in 2001 and the Diamondbacks won the World Series.
