Kumar Rocker, Rangers prosect, to have Tommy John surgery

Rangers prospect Kumar Rocker will have Tommy John surgery.

Rocker was the No. 3 pick in the 2022 MLB draft. He previously was drafted by the Mets in 2021 but did not sign in part because of concerns with his physical.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports that the injury is “acute” and was different from anything the Rangers had previously seen.

The timing for Rocker is a bit disappointing as he was in line for a promotion according to general manager Chris Young.

Rocker was paid a $5.2 million bonus as the third overall pick, under the $7.6 million slot value. His deal with the Mets which fell though was worth $6 million.

Though six starts at High-A, Rocker was 2-2 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He had a 42/7 K/BB ratio.
