Manager Buck Showalter pulled Scherzer in the fourth inning after 75 pitches. Scherzer will face the Reds on the road in his next outing.
Scherzer had been serving a 10-game suspension following a failed foreign substance check on his hand and glove.
The Tigers won by a final score of 8-1. With the loss and a Braves win the Mets are currently 5 games back in the NL East with a 16-15 record.
