Mariners designate veteran for assignment

The Seattle Mariners designated Tommy La Stella for assignment on Tuesday.

By clearing a roster spot, the Mariners were able to select the contract of pitcher Bryce Miller from the minors.

Miller, 24, spent last season at three different minor league levels within the Mariners organization finishing with a 3.16 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 163/46 K/BB over 133 2/3 innings of work. The expectation is that he will get a long look in the Mariners rotation with Robbie Ray and Easton McGee both out with forearm injuries.

The Mariners could not have picked a better opportunity for Miller to get off to a good start in the majors as he will face the Oakland Athletics who at 6-23 rank at or near the bottom of just about every offensive statistic.

La Stella, 34, was hitting a mere /190/.292/.238 on the season. La Stella was playing a one-year contract with the Mariners worth $720,000.
