Rain forced the NASCAR Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway to be run on a Monday but Martin Truex Jr., who ended a 54 race winless streak, still described the feeling of being in victory lane as “incredible.”
The older Truex matched his younger brother scoring a win in the Wurth 400, two days after Ryan Truex scored his first Xfinity Series win at the 1-mile track.
“It feels incredible,” Truex said. “I feel like we’ve been close a bunch of times, that’s for sure. Felt today, with that caution, what’s going to happen here and then good call by (crew chief) James (Small) to take two (tires) and then I was able to get a pretty good restart.
“Just thanks to everybody that stuck with me. … we knew we could do this. We’ve shown we can lead laps and have dominated races and it just never all came together. I’ve said we just had to keep doing what we were doing and not overthink it.”
The win is the 32nd in the career of Truex as he finished ahead of Ross Chastain who was involved in an early race incident which eliminated Kyle Larson from contention. Ryan Blaney scored his best finish at Dover in third followed by William Byron and Denny Hamlin.
Kyle Busch began the day on the pole after rain forced qualifying to be cancelled on Saturday. He would be hit with a speeding penalty on lap 22 during the first round of pit stops. He would later suffer front end damage on lap 34.
