Panthers release veteran quarterback

With two games remaining in the season the Carolina Panthers have released a veteran quarterback trimming their options to just three.

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule will have to choose between Cam Newton, Sam Darnold and P.J. Walker after the release of veteran quarterback Matt Barkley.

Barkley, 31, joined the Panthers on Nov. 9 after Darnold suffered a right shoulder fracture in a loss to New England. The Panthers had Barkley active for one game this season.

Though his career Barkley has completed 212-of-363 passes for 2,699 yards while tossing 11 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.

It is unclear what can really be made from the release of Barkley. The Panthers were never going to turn the offense over to him and his release does nothing to clear up the quarterback situation with the Panthers.

In their most recent loss the Panthers played Darnold and Newton at quarterback but managed just two field goals in a 32-6 loss to Tampa Bay.
