William Byron joined a small group of distinguished drivers with his pole time of 28.510 for Sunday’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway.
Byron joins Fireball Roberts (1962) and Bill Elliott (1985) as the only drivers who have won the pole for the Daytona 500, Coca-Cola 600 and Southern 500 in the same season.
The MENCS will race at the 1.366 mile egg-shaped track on Sunday with NBCSN and MRN providing coverage starting at 6 pm ET.
Byron’s car is a the City Chevrolet, a nod to the movie “Days of Thunder.” This is Byron’s fourth pole of the season.
he No. 95 Leavine Family Racing Toyota of Matt DiBenedetto failed pre-qualifying inspection twice on Saturday. As a result, NASCAR ejected the car chief for Sunday’s race.
