Robert Mathis has torn Achilles’ tendon

Suspended Indianapolis Colts linebacker Robert Mathis will miss the entire 2014 season with a torn Achilles’ tendon.

Mathis, who was suspended for the first four games of the season, injured himself while working out on his own last week reports Pro Football Talk. He has one year left on his contract at $7 million. He is set to make $5 million this season.

The loss of Mathis for four games was significant but losing him for the season will be a heavy load for the rest of the defense to pick up. Mathis was an All-Pro a season ago while recording 19.5 sacks. Bjoern Werner and Erik Walden are left to fill the role of outside linebacker for the season.

Mathis, 33, had been suspended by the NFL for violating this policy of performance enhancing drugs. The linebacker claims his failed drug test was the result of a fertility drug.
