The Philadelphia Phillies have given outfielder Bobby Abreu his release after he failed to win a roster spot with the team for Opening Day.

Abreu, 40, signed on with the Phillies in January hoping to compete for a spot on the teams bench after not playing during the 2013 season.

Recently Abreu had dealt with some shoulder soreness this spring. For the spring he hit .244/.404/.366 in 17 games.

With Abreu unable to play the field his chances to return to the majors are slim. He will presumably look for a job in the American League but that does not figure to be an easy task.

A two-time All-Star, Abreu is a career .292/.396/.477 hitter with 287 home runs, 1349 RBI, 1441 runs scored and 399 stolen bases.
