The St. Louis Cardinals and third baseman Matt Carpenter are working on a multt-year contract extension.
General manager John Mozeliak told the Post-Dispatch on Wednesday evening that he had been in discussion with Carpenter’s agent.
The 28-year-old Carpenter is not arbitration-eligible until 2015. Still the Cardinals are hoping they can lock him up before his arbitration years kick in.
Carpenter finished fourth in the National League MVP voting in 2013 after hitting .318/.392/.481 with a league-leading 55 doubles and 126 runs in 157 games. He is expected to lead off for the Cardinals again in 2014.
