The New York Yankees have designated outfielder Vernon Wells for assignment.
Wells, 35, finished 2013 with a .233/.282/.349 with 11 home runs in 130 games but it was not enough to earn him a roster spot in 2014.
The Yankees have a surprise of outfielders and needed a spot on their 40-man roster. Wells figures to get a look at a back-up role elsewhere.
Of the $21 million owed to Wells in 2014 the Yankees are on the hook for less than $3 million. In addition the Yankees will receive luxury tax breaks for acquiring Wells who previously had been traded to the Angels
