Verbal offer, not contract, given to Nick Saban by Alabama

Those reports from ESPN about a contract sitting on Nick Saban’s desk for nearly a week were a little exagerated reports the network in a followup story.

In fact Saban has only been given a verbal agreement by Alabama to become he highest paid coach in college football. Of course if he were to leave Alabama for Texas he would still figure to be the highest paid coach in the nation.

Here’s the highlight of the latest ESPN report:

Representatives for coach Nick Saban and Alabama are talking about a contract extension, but the longer there is no agreement, the more uncomfortable Crimson Tide officials grow, sources told ESPN.

Saban has a verbal “offer of commitment” from Alabama officials to make him the highest-paid coach in college football, a source told ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, rather than an actual contract, as earlier reported. Sources tell Finebaum and ESPN.com’s Chris Low that while there have been discussions about a new deal, no formal offer is actually in place.

For what its worth Mack Brown says his job status at Texas has not changed.
