NASCAR will review the events from Saturday nights race at Richmond International Raceway. On Sunday NASCAR released the following statement.
“NASCAR is reviewing Saturday night’s race at Richmond International Raceway per protocol and has no plans for further statement until that process is complete.”
There will be plenty for NASCAR to review.
Carl Edwards who began the final restart second beat leader Paul Menard to the start/finish line as the green flag waved. Typically this results in a penalty but Edwards was not penalized and went on to win Saturday nights race. Menard who opted to stay out on old tires attempted to go in the restart zone but found it hard on old tires. He would bump the door of Edwards prior to reaching the line.
Of course the event that has everyone talking is what led to the final restart. Clint Bowyer received radio transmission saying “your arms must be starting to hurt” after which he spun his No. 15 Toyota. The spin benefited Bowyer’s teammate Martin Truex Jr. and came at the expense of Ryan Newman who was on his way to the race win and a wild card spot in the chase. Instead Truex earned entry via a tie breaker after Carl Edwards won the race.
Joey Logano also benefited from Bowyer’s spin allowing him to finish inside the top ten in points, and keeping Jeff Gordon from making the Chase.
