Cowboys close to extension with Tony Romo

The Dallas Cowboys are moving in on an extension with Tony Romo. Dallas has made it clear they still envision Romo as a franchise quarterback.

Those praises have not stopped.

“I feel good about where he is in his career. I like the fact that he spent the time he spent with Jason [Garrett] and Wade Wilson. I do expect with Bill Callahan involved and some of the input from the new staff. I do expect some new wrinkles, so to speak, relative to what Tony Romo contributes to the team.” said Jones during the NFL owners meetings.

Dallas is right up against the salary cap even after a slue of releases and restructurings. Romo is currently set to count $16.8 million against the salary cap in 2013.

A new deal for Romo would expect to clover three or four years with an annual salary around $10 million.

Dallas has not made the playoffs since the 2009 season.

No to Urlacher

Executive vice president Stephen Jones was asked about the possibility of the Cowboys signing Brian Urlacher. While Jones had kind words to say about Urlacher he said signing him to backup Sean Lee was not in the teams plans.
