It has not been simple for Rodney Childers this season. The 36 year-old crew chief joined Michael Waltrip Racing in 2008. He was soon partnered with David Reutimann and later in 2009 helped MWR earn it’s first win at the Coca-Cola 600.
After another win in 2010 the duo fell on hard times last season. Reutimann was let go but Childers remained. As Michael Waltrip expanded his racing team from two full time cars to three it became evident that one of the teams was going to have a rotating driver.
Brian Pattie was brought in to crew chief the car driven by the newly signed Clint Bowyer. Chad Johnston returned to crew chief Martin Truex Jr. The task of working with multiple drivers fell on Childers.
Childers was up to the task though. This season he has led the No. 55 car with three different drivers who have three different driving styles. Mark Martin has driven the car the most of the three drivers. With how well he has run in the car it could be wondered if he could have made the Chase had he run the full season. Brian Vickers has far exceeded expectations during his stints and Michael Waltrip has gotten behind the wheel on the plate tracks.
The news of Childers extension was announced on twitter on Monday and later confirmed via a press release.
Despite all the driver changes and four blown motors the No. 55 car is 14th in the overall car owner standings which is a testament to the work of Johnston.
