Clint Bowyer won Saturday nights NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway. He managed a win by saving fuel. Denny Hamlin attempted to close in on Bowyer during the races closing laps but was unable to. Jimmie Johnson finished third.
The win was Bowyer’s third of the season, a career high in a season. Bowyer won at Sonoma and Richmond.
Bowyer ran out of fuel while doing a celebratory burnout. The crew pushed his car to victory lane.
Greg Biffle started the race from the pole after setting a new track record. He led the early laps of the race but was shuffled back though the pack after taking four tires while some others took two.
A battle than ensued between Brad Keselowski and Jimmie Johnson.
Tony Stewart ran into the back of the car of Keselowski on a lap 16 restart. Also incurring damage on the restart were Jeff Burton and David Ragan. Matt Kenseth’s night started off with a spin on lap four.
Keselowski would finish 11th and maintain a 7 point lead in the driver standings over Johnson. Hamlin moved to 15 back and Bowyer is now 28 behind.
