NASCAR icon Bill Elliott will drive the #50 Walmart Chevrolet for the July race at Daytona. Walmart is latching on to Elliott to celebrate their 50th anniversary. The car will be provided by Turner Motorsports.
Currently the plan is for Elliott to run the car in one race. Rand Waddoups, the senior director of Entertainment Properties and Brands for Walmart, said that they hope to ‘have fun with it’ and that while there are no plans to go past the single race “we have six months yet.”
Elliott is guaranteed a starting spot due to his past champions provisional. Considering that all of the drivers who have won a championship after Elliott are likely to be inside the top-35 he should be able to start any race he shows up at. The 56 year old Elliott has run only part-time since 2003. His last top-10 finish came in 2004 at Indianapolis.
Bill’s son, Chase, is signed to a developmental contract with Hendrick Motorsprots. Chase won the Snowball Derby recently.
