Murphy elected to hall ballot in 2011!

Small victories that’s the way to put it for Dale Murphy and Brave fans hoping to see him in Cooperstown. In his 12th try for election Murphy was denied entrance into Baseball’s Hall of Fame receiving 11.7% of the vote.

The 11.7% is actually an increase over the 11.5% he received last season and it ensures that Murphy will again be listed on the ballot with names such as Alan Trammell, Barry Larkin, Lee Smith, Bert Byleven and Roberto Alomar again next season.

It was the 10th time in 12 times no the ballot that Murphy received 10 or more percent of the vote. His highest was 23.2% in 2000, with a low of 8.5% back in 2004.

It was assumed that when Murphy retired he was headed to the hall instead the 2 time NL MVP, 7 time all star, 5 time Gold Glove winner and perhaps baseball’s biggest example of a clean player has been held out.

Some argued that light being shed on baseball’s steroid saga would bolster Murphy’s chances into the hall, as Murphy’s career numbers are comparable to many known users. However the percentages haven’t made a case for that argument.

For those interested in reading more on Murphy I would suggest the always popular Murphy Tribute site, Forever A Brave.
