Kyle Shanahan and Browns part ways

The Cleveland Browns and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan are parting ways.

Shanhan’s tenure with the Browns lasted on season. During that span he got a lot of use out of journeyman backup Brian Hoyer guiding the team to an 7-4 record before the wheels fell off. Friction between the front office and the Browns coaching staff about playing No. 22 overall pick Johnny Manziel proved to be Shanahan’s undoing.

Much like his previous experience in Washington with Robert Griffin III, Shanahan did not believe in Manziel. Given the results of both Griffin and Manziel in 2014 it is hard to argue with him.

Shanahan reportedly asked for his release this week and it was granted by the Browns. Quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains was also fired on Thursday.

The Bills and 49ers have both been linked to the younger Shanahan as a head coaching option. There is also a strong believe that Kyle will follow his father Mike should the elder Shanahan reenter the NFL as a head coach for the 2015 season.

With Shanahan leaving the Browns will be left to pick up their ninth different offensive coordinator since 2006. Charlie Weis is among the early names being mentioned.
